The Baycrest City Council voted 5-0 on Tuesday evening to approve a major expansion of the waterfront park along Lake Shore Drive. The decision follows months of public consultations and environmental reviews. Council members cited increased recreational demand and flood resilience as key factors in the approval.

Expansion Plans

The project will add 12 acres of new parkland, including paved walking trails, a kayak launch, native plant gardens, and two playground areas. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2025 and finish by late 2026. Total estimated cost is $4.8 million, with $2.1 million from federal grants, $1.5 million from municipal bonds, and the remainder from private donations. Engineers will also install new stormwater management features to reduce erosion along the shoreline.

City planner Maria Lopez presented updated designs that preserve existing mature trees while creating open lawns for community events. The expansion connects to the existing 3-mile waterfront trail system, improving access for cyclists and pedestrians. No new parking lots are planned; instead, the city will add bike racks and improve nearby bus stops.

Community Impact

Residents living within a 2-mile radius will gain direct access to additional green space, addressing a documented shortage identified in the 2023 parks master plan. Local businesses expect a modest increase in foot traffic during summer months. Environmental groups welcomed the inclusion of pollinator habitats and shoreline restoration that will support fish populations.

Funding agreements require the city to maintain the new areas for at least 20 years. Quarterly progress reports will be posted on the municipal website.
